Chevrolet's subcompact Trax crossover was heavily revised for 2017. It got new styling front and rear, and an updated interior with nicer materials and a new infotainment system that added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Chevy added available blind spot alerts, rear cross traffic warnings, forward collision alert, and lane departure warnings.
With those big changes, there isn't much new this year. The biggest changes are some shuffling of trims and making the active safety features standard on the top Premier trim.
The Trax isn't the most fun to drive, but that's a tall order in a class that includes the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V. It also doesn't offer the off-road chops of the Jeep Renegade. What it does offer is a confident on-highway drive, with a suspension that is firm enough to not fall on its face when the roads get twisty, but soft enough to handle potholes in town.
It also offers lots of space, having a very roomy cabin and plenty of cargo storage. The Trax, along with its Buick Encore stablemate, offer excellent headroom for passengers front and rear. It also offers a 1.4L turbo-four that puts 138 hp through a six-speed automatic. Front-drive is standard, with all-wheel drive available.
The base Trax LS offers OnStar with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot. The infotainment system uses Chevrolet's excellent MyLink system and operates through a 7.0-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Keyless entry is standard, as are power windows 16-inch alloys and AC, but if you want cruise control, you'll need to step up to LT.
The LT also adds roof rack rails, satellite radio and remote start. LT trim also gets you heated mirrors, and under seat storage drawer, 110-volt power outlet, and LED running lamps. The active safety feature package is optional, as are power seats and a leather-wrapped wheel.
The top Premier trim is all-wheel drive only and adds leatherette seats, illuminated vanity mirrors, and a Bose stereo. Power and heated seats are also standard, as is a power sunroof.
Fuel economy for the front-drive Trax is rated at 9.2 L/100 km city and 7.1 highway. The all-wheel drive model is rated for 9.8/7.7.
