For 2007, the Chevrolet Trailblazer comes in only one length: the seven-passenger, extended-wheelbase Trailblazer EXT has been retired. Other 2007 changes include a standard tire pressure monitoring system on all models, OnStar now has a Directions & Connections Plan with turn-by-turn navigation, and new exterior colours Moondust Metallic, Imperial Blue and Graphite Metallic are offered. There’s also new regulated voltage control, which improves fuel mileage by reducing engine load from the alternator.
The Trailblazer comes with a choice of three engines: LS and LT trim lines use a standard 4.2-litre inline six-cylinder that can be optioned to a 5.3-litre V8 with Active Fuel Management, which deactivates half the cylinders under light load for better fuel economy. The SS model exclusively uses a Corvette-derived 6.0-litre V8; all three engines mate to a four-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission that’s heavier-duty in the SS.
The LS includes air conditioning, fog lights, heated mirrors, 17-inch aluminum wheels, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, variable intermittent wipers, rear washer/wiper, cruise control, power mirrors, OnStar, CD player, keyless entry, and traction control (on 2WD models).
The LT adds overhead console with garage door opener, leather-wrapped wheel, eight-way power driver’s seat and theft alarm.
Available options include power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals, curtain airbags, leather interior, sunroof, running boards, upgraded stereo, DVD entertainment system, XM Satellite Radio and navigation system.
The SS comes in 2WD or 4WD and includes 20-inch wheels, performance suspension with lowered ride height, larger heavy-duty brakes, performance-style bucket seats and SS-specific exterior and interior styling cues. An accessory front brake cooling package can be added for optimized performance.
The rugged, body-on-frame Trailblazer shares its platform with the GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier and Saab 9-7X, but has the lowest starting price. Its V6 is well-suited to it, but handling tends to be mushy, and interior quality could be better; the SS version really tightens up the steering and suspension, but may be more power than many buyers prefer. Shop the Trailblazer against competitors such as the Honda Pilot, Toyota 4Runner, Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango before you choose.
