Did you know the Suburban is one of the auto industry’s longest-running vehicle nameplates? Since, the 1930s, the name has been associated with hard-working utility vehicles; of course, these days, that utility is blended with plenty of comfort and, if you’re willing to pay for it, luxury.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
The Suburban’s news for 2023 is the availability of GM’s Super Cruise highway driving assist system in the truck’s top trims.
Available Trims
Chevrolet offers the Suburban in LS, LT, Z71, RST, Premier, and High Country trims. Most of those configurations come with a 5.3L V8 engine, but you can also choose from a 6.2L V8 or a 3.0L turbodiesel six-cylinder. All engines are matched with a 10-speed transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive.
Standard Features
LS comes with a limited-slip rear differential, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights/taillights, rain-sensing wipers, passive keyless entry, and remote engine start. Inside, there’s a six-speaker stereo, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, eight-way power front seats, and three-zone A/C.
Suburban’s standard safety kit comprises forward collision mitigation, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams.
LT gains a hands-free tailgate, 10-way power/heated front seats, a 10.2-inch touchscreen, nine-speaker audio, an auto-dimming mirror, wireless phone charging, and leather upholstery.
RST brings 22-inch wheels and perforated leather.
Z71 adds low-range 4WD gearing, hill descent control, and 20-inch wheels.
Premier brings a dual-exit exhaust, a driver’s side auto-dimming mirror, 12-way power front seats with ventilation, heated second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, 10-speaker audio, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, power steering wheel adjustments, and a power sliding centre console.
High Country comes with the 6.2L engine, 22-inch wheels, surround-view cameras, a head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, and rear pedestrian alert.
Key Options
To LS through Z71 trims, a driver alert package adds blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
LT offers a signature pack of 20-inch wheels, panoramic roof, and a trailering bundle. A signature plus option is similar but drops the trailering features.
A luxury package adds surround vision, rear pedestrian alert, power-folding/auto-dimming side mirrors, a heated steering wheel with power adjustments, heated second-row seats, and a power-folding third row.
In the Z71 model, an off-road capability pack brings magnetic ride control, air suspension, and an electronic limited-slip differential.
An RST sport performance bundle adds the 6.2L engine and magnetic ride control suspension.
Premier trim offers an advanced tech package of Super Cruise, reverse automatic braking, and enhanced forward collision mitigation. A premium package gets trailering features, a panoramic roof, digital rearview mirror, and adaptive cruise control; a similar enhanced display and alert pack brings rear pedestrian alert and surround vision.
In High Country models, the premium package options also adds power-retractable side steps; a High Country Deluxe pack bundles a panoramic roof, trailering features, power side steps, and an air suspension.
Fuel Economy
The Suburban’s diesel engine is its thriftiest powerplant at 11.2/8.7 L/100 km (city/highway) with rear-wheel drive, and 11.7/9.0 L/100 km with 4WD. Trucks with the 5.3L engine are rated for 15.8/11.8 L/100 km with RWD, and 16.0/12.7 L/100 km with 4WD. The 6.2L engine and its standard 4WD is rated at 16.6/13.1 L/100 km.
Competition
If you’re in the market for a full-size SUV, shop the Suburban against the Ford Expedition Max, and the Toyota Sequoia. GMC sells the Yukon XL, which is a mechanical twin to the Suburban.
