Chevrolet calls its Suburban "the original SUV," and it's also one of the largest passenger vehicles of any kind you can buy for any amount of money.
Sharing pickup-based architecture with the Tahoe, the Suburban boasts both a longer wheelbase and rear overhang to create a big SUV that can carry up to nine passengers (this is among the only vehicles still available with a front bench seat) and a decent amount of cargo behind the third row.
News for the 2017 model includes the addition of GM's teen driver feature as standard. it allows parents to see the vehicle's top speed and distance, and whether any of the car's active safety features were activated.
The top LTZ trim is replaced with a Premier model that gets perforated leather seating with heating and ventilation functions for the driver and front passenger. An available rear seat DVD entertainment system adds an HDMI connector, an extra USB port, digital headphones and device projection; the MyLink infotainment system adds in-vehicle shopping apps; low-speed forward emergency braking becomes available; front active grille shutters improve highway fuel economy; and the Premier model can be optioned with new 22-inch wheels.
Elsewise, the 2017 Suburban is similar to its 2016 predecessor. Like the smaller Tahoe, it has few direct competitors. They include another GM model -- the stretched GMC Yukon XL -- and the similarly-denoted Ford Expedition XL. For the money, the Suburban offers a lot more space and luxury features for the money than, say, a Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class or an Audi Q7.
Power is from a 5.3L V8 making 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, and a six-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD with low-range gearing is an option.
Fuel consumption estimates are 15.1/10.4 L/100 km (city/highway) in 2WD models, and 15.4/10.8 L/100 km with 4WD.
The Suburban lineup starts in LS trim, which comes with a locking rear differential, rear park assist, OnStar guidance plan, heated side mirrors, 18-inch wheels, six-speaker MyLink infotainment stereo, 110-volt power outlet, automatic climate control, front bucket seats (a three-place bench is an option), leather-trimmed steering wheel, tilt steering, cruise control, keyless entry and a backup camera.
LT models add forward collision alert, automatic high-beam headlights, power tailgate, nine-speaker stereo, auto-dimming rearview mirror, tilt-and-telescopic steering, lane keep assist and power-adjustable pedals.
Premier trim brings passive keyless entry with push-button start, magnetic ride control suspension, front park assist, power-folding side mirrors, 20-inch wheels, HID headlights, programmable-height power tailgate, 10-speaker stereo, navigation, power-release second-row bucket seats, heated second-row seats, heated steering wheel, power-adjustable tilt-and-telescopic steering and side blind zone alert with lane change alert and rear cross traffic alert.
