Completely redesigned for 2007, the Chevrolet Suburban receives additional tweaking for 2008, with new safety and trim features as standard or optional equipment.
Available in 1500 and 2500 designation, and in two- or four-wheel drive, the Suburban is offered in LS, LT and LTZ trim lines, as well as an optional Z71 Off-Road package. The 1500 comes with a 5.3-litre V8, the 2500 with a 6.0-litre V8, both with Active Fuel Management, which shuts off half the cylinders under light load for improved fuel economy. The 5.3-litre is mated to a four-speed automatic, while the 6.0-litre uses a new six-speed automatic.
Features on the LS include 17-inch aluminum wheels, tri-zone manual climate control, assist steps, privacy glass, heated mirrors, roof rack side rails, variable intermittent wipers, rear washer/wiper, cruise control, floor mats, auxiliary rear heater, driver information centre, auto-dimming mirror with compass and outside temperature display, leather-wrapped wheel with audio controls, power windows, keyless entry, trailer tow package, tire pressure monitoring system, 40/20/40 front bench cloth seat with six-way power driver's adjustment, 60/40 split folding second-row seat, two-passenger removable third-row 50/50 bench seat, CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary jack, and OnStar.
The LT adds fog lamps, roof rack cross bars, front centre console, front bucket seats with six-way power driver's adjustment, second-row audio controls and headphone jacks, and one year of OnStar Directions & Connections plan.
The LTZ comes in four-wheel drive only and adds 20-inch aluminum wheels, chrome door handles, power liftgate, power-folding mirrors with driver's side auto-dimming, reverse tilt and integrated turn signals, power sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, automatic tri-zone climate control, rear cargo mat, power-adjustable pedals, garage door opener, AutoRide road-sensing suspension with automatic rear level control, rear parking assist, leather seats with ten-way power adjustment and driver's side memory, second-row reclining bucket seats with power-release fold-and-tumble, three-passenger removable 50/50 split-bench seat, and six-CD/MP3 stereo with XM Satellite Radio.
Also appearing as the GMC Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade ESV, the Suburban delivers an ultra-smooth ride and one of GM's best-ever interiors. The six-speed automatic is a huge improvement over the four-speed and hopefully it will eventually make its way across the line-up. The driving experience is almost more of a big car, until you make your first hard turn and realize how bulky it is. Interior room is correspondingly impressive, although cargo space is minimized by the third row; if you're not carrying passengers, it can be removed to improve its hauling capacity while still coddling its first- and second-row passengers.
