Chevrolet’s subcompact Sonic is one of the few models in Chevrolet’s lineup that isn’t all new or heavily updated for 2016. Nevertheless, there’s still much to appreciate about this hatchback and sedan duo, which offers big-car refinement and performance in an affordable package.
For 2016, Chevrolet has added a couple of new colours to the Sonic’s pallet including Nightfall Grey, Mosaic Black, and Kinetic Blue. Meanwhile, the luxury LTZ trim now gains an automatic transmission as standard equipment. Buyers can still get the 1.4-litre turbo engine paired to a six-speed gearbox on the RS trim. Oddly, Chevy has opted to skip out on updating the Sonic’s infotainment system to the latest version of MyLink; it has Siri Eyes Free integration, but lacks CarPlay or Android Auto.
The Sonic is available in sedan or hatchback body style in all trims. The LS and LT use a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that develops 138 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque, which is strong for this category. A six-speed manual is standard, a six-speed automatic is an option. Buyers desiring even more zip can opt for the LTZ or RS trims, which use the 1.4-litre turbo four found in the Chevrolet Cruze and Trax crossover. It also develops 138 hp, but has 23 extra lb-ft of torque (148 lb-ft in total). The RS can be had with a short-geared six-speed manual, the LTZ gets a six-speed automatic. Being larger and heavier than its rivals, the Sonic isn’t as good on gas in the city, but makes up for it by consuming 6.2 L/100 km on the highway on 1.4T engines in LTZ guise.
As far as small cars go, the Sonic is very well equipped. All but the base LS receive a reverse camera, air conditioning, heated front seats, and cruise control as standard, with leather upholstery, a power moonroof, and other niceties as optional extras. OnStar with 4G LTE internet is available, as are forward collision warning and lane-departure warning. What isn’t an extra are airbags – the Sonic gets 10 as standard.
Prices for the Sonic LS Sedan start at $14,395. The RS Hatchback with Automatic sells for $25,395.
