Chevrolet completely redesigned its Silverado full-size, light-duty pickup truck last year to cast an even more imposing shadow in one of the auto industry's most competitive vehicle segments.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2020, the Silverado gains a number of notable updates. Certain trims get a 10-speed transmission, and Chevrolet has added a new diesel engine option. A camera-based adaptive cruise control system is now available, too.
Available Trims
Chevrolet Silverado trim levels include Work Truck (WT), Custom, LT, Trail Boss, RST, LTZ, and High Country. Engines include a 4.3L V6; a 2.7L turbo four-cylinder; 5.3L and 6.2L V8s, and a 3.0L inline-six turbodiesel. Transmissions are 6-, 8- and 10-speed automatics. The Silverado is offered with rear- and four-wheel drive.
Standard Features
Silverado WT comes with the 4.3L engine and six-speed transmission, capless fuel filling, an engine oil cooler, 17-inch steel wheels, black exterior trim, a cargo area light and locking tailgate, a 12-volt power outlet, a 2-speaker stereo, manual front seat adjustments, Bluetooth, a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, manual door locks, manual windows,vinyl flooring and seating, tilt steering, tire pressure monitoring, and a USB input.
Custom trim adds 20-inch chrome wheels, body-colour front and rear bumpers, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, LED taillights, a 6-speaker stereo, carpeted flooring, cruise control, front floor mats, power door locks, power windows, keyless entry, and cloth seating.
Custom Trail Boss trim adds a two-speed 4WD transfer case, a locking rear differential, hill descent control, skid plates, 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, recovery hooks, a trailer hitch receiver and pre-wiring, and a lifted suspension.
LT trim also builds on the Custom package with the 2.7L engine, 8-speed transmission, engine auto stop/start, 17-inch aluminum wheels, body-colour door handles, chrome bumpers and mirror caps, LED headlights, an easy-lift tailgate, a colour driver info display, a compass, OnStar, semi-automatic single-zone climate control, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
RST trim brings silver-painted wheels, a black front grille badge, a body-colour rear bumper, LED fog lights and taillights, painted mirror caps, a power tailgate lock, a 12-volt rear power outlet, passive keyless open, push-button engine start, a rear window defroster, remote engine start, and an anti-theft season.
LTZ gains the 5.3L V8, an advanced trailering system, a locking rear differential, transmission fluid and engine oil coolers, chrome door handles, bumpers and mirror caps, auto-dimming/power-folding side mirrors, power-adjustable front seats, a 120-volt bed-mounted power outlet, an 8.0-inch infotainment display, dual-zone automatic climate control, HD radio, heated front seats and steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a leather-trimmed/tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, perforated leather upholstery, and satellite radio.
An LT Trail Boss package builds on Custom Trail Boss, adding the 10-speed transmission, the 5.3L engine, auto engine stop/start, a transmission cooler, a black front badge, LED cargo bed lighting, LED fog- and headlights, an easy-lift tailgate, a 12-volt rear power outlet, the 4.2-inch driver info display, a Wi-Fi hotspot, all-weather floor liners, passive keyless entry and push-button engine start, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a rear window defroster, semi-automatic single-zone climate control, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
Finally, High Country trim gets the 5.3L/10-speed powertrain, a two-speed transfer case, 20-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, chrome recovery hooks, upgraded LED headlights, a power tailgate, an 8.0-inch digital driver info display, a Bose stereo, navigation, front and rear park assist, heated rear seats, lane change alert with blind spot monitoring, a power sliding rear window, rear cross traffic alert, ventilated front seats, and wireless smartphone charging.
Key Options
A Safety Package II adds forward collision alert with pedestrian detection and automatic braking, lane keep assist, automatic high beams, a following distance indicator, adaptive cruise control, and GM's safety alert seat.
A pair of convenience packages add a variety of niceties like dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, passive keyless entry, power front seats, and heated front seats.
Chevrolet also offers 22-inch wheels in certain trims.
Fuel Economy
The Silverado fuel consumption leader is the diesel model, whose estimates are 10.2/7.2 L/100 km (city/highway) with 2WD and 10.4/8.0 with 4WD.
Silverado's 2.7L four-cylinder is rated 11.9/10.3 L/100 km, and 12.5/10.8 with 4WD.
The 5.3L V8's estimates are 13.9/10.1 L/100 km, or 14.3/10.6 with 4WD.
4.3L V6 model ratings are 15.1/11.5 L/100 km, and 15.7/12.0 with 4WD.
Finally, the 6.2L engine is rated 15.0/12.0 with its standard 4WD system.
Competition
The Silverado is Chevrolet's weapon against full-size truck heavyweights like the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. It also goes up against the Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra, and the GMC Sierra, which is a mechanical near-twin to the Silverado.
