With the arrival of the Nissan-based City Express, Chevrolet has retired the smallest version of its Express van. Although it’s a farewell to the 1500 and 1500 AWD models, the heavier-duty 2500 and 3500 remain in production. And that’s good news for business and families looking for a value-oriented, tried and true workhorse.
The Express is sold as a passenger van or commercial vehicle. Both the 2500 and 3500 feature Chevy’s iconic small block V8 engines – the base motor is a 4.8-litre V8, with a burlier 6.0-litre offered as an optional extra. The larger of the V8s can also be fitted with an option to run on CNG. For really heavy loads, there’s a 6.6-litre Duramax diesel engine, which is considerably bigger than any of the diesel engines on offer from Ram, Ford or Mercedes. Combined with a ladder frame with boxed sections, the Express is capable of towing a pickup-like 10,000 lbs. All engines route through a six-speed automatic before hitting the road through the rear wheels.
Trim levels on the passenger van are LS and LT; 2500 and 3500 models feature 12-passenger seating, with the 3500 Extended model offering seating for up to 15.
Cargo vans offer seating for 2 or 5, and can be had in regular or Extended form. LS is the only trim offered.
Features on the LS include 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, auxiliary rear heater, 110-volt power outlet, OnStar with Turn-by-Turn Navigation, engine block heater, painted bumpers, swing-out side doors, privacy glass, manual mirrors, swing-out rear door, variable intermittent wipers, full-length black vinyl flooring, tire pressure monitoring system, front vinyl-covered bucket seats, and AM/FM/aux-in stereo.
LT adds 16-inch steel wheels with chrome caps, rear air conditioning, power doors locks with keyless entry, cloth upholstery, chrome bumpers, chrome grille with composite headlamps, outside temperature display, compass, auxiliary light package, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, carpeting with rubber floor mats, console with swing-out storage bin, remote starter, tilt steering column, dual vanity mirrors with passenger side illumination, power windows with driver’s auto-down.
Available options include sliding side door, heated power mirrors, trailer tow package, leather-wrapped steering wheel, auxiliary lights, rear defroster, power heated mirrors, park assist, reverse camera, remote starter, body colour rear trim, assist steps, USB port, Bluetooth, satellite radio, navigation, and power-adjustable front seats.
