For 2007, the biggest change to Cadillac’s SRX midsize tall wagon is inside, where it receives an all-new cockpit with new design and materials. Vehicles equipped with the Northstar V8 swap last year’s five-speed automatic transmission for a six-speed automatic originally introduced on the STS-V and XLR-V. There’s a Sport package with 20-inch wheels, all-wheel drive and limited-slip differential; the base audio system is upgraded to Bose, with an optional Bose 5.1 Digital Surround Sound system available; there’s an available automatic odour filtration option; and PSIR (Passenger Side Inflatable Restraint) Suppression, which detects a front-seat passenger’s size and activates or deactivates the airbag accordingly. Like all Cadillac models, the SRX receives OnStar’s new “Directions & Connections” plan with turn-by-turn navigation feature.
The interior features a new instrument panel, hand-wrapped upper trim, console, centre stack, door trim, wood trim, analog clock and steering wheel, and incorporates flush-mounted switches and controls, and more woodgrain and chrome trim, and a new storage compartment on the passenger side of the instrument panel.
In addition to the 20-inch wheels, the Sport package also includes Sport-specific front and rear fascias, body-coloured grille with mesh backing, 4-inch dual polished exhaust tips, performance tires and chrome roof rack.
The SRX is available with a 3.6-litre V6 and five-speed automatic, or 4.6-litre Northstar V8 with new six-speed automatic; both engines can be optioned with all-wheel drive featuring 50/50 torque split, and both transmissions have manual shift mode. Both V6 and V8 models can be optioned with Magnetic Ride Control, which continuously and automatically varies the damping at each wheel for improved ride and handling.
Standard features on the V6 include 17-inch aluminum wheels, privacy glass, fog lights, power liftgate, heated mirrors, roof rack side rails, rear wiper/washer, cargo cover, automatic dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather-wrapped wheel with audio controls, express up/down on all windows, leather interior, eight-way power driver’s seat, 60/40 folding rear seat, Bose stereo, four ventilated disc brakes, automatic headlamps and rear parking assist.
The V8 model adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, driver’s side auto-dimming exterior mirror, passenger-side reverse tilt-down mirror, garage door opener, driver’s position memory, wood trim package, and heated seats with eight-way power passenger adjustment.
An available electrically-operated folding third-row seat increases seating capacity to seven, but it’s a tight fit; unless you really need to haul extra people, opt for the rear cargo management system, which includes three cargo compartments and a removable storage bin.
The SRX slots in nicely between the DTS and Escalade: it has greater interior capacity, but lacks the big SUV’s bulk. Headroom is excellent in all seating positions, and the new interior is elegant and offers a bit more passenger space than before. The all-wheel drive system is a real full-time torque distribution variety, and the optional Magnetic Ride Control makes the SRX’s smooth ride even better. This is a well-done luxury machine at a good price.
