After a year’s hiatus, Cadillac’s unique Volt-based plug-in hybrid coupe makes a return to dealerships. Although it doesn’t use the new second-gen Volt’s drivetrain or chassis, Cadillac has given its stylish enviro-special a thorough working over. Tweaks to the Voltec powertrain net an additional 25 percent increase in power for sportier acceleration, while upgrades to the suspension, adaptive dampers, and brakes also promise a more direct and linear feel on the road. Cadillac is also offering a new Performance Package that includes sticky high-performance summer tires, four-piston Brembo brakes, and unique suspension tuning. The added grip doesn’t come for free: it eats away at the all-electric range, reducing it from 60 km to 53.5. A full recharge of the ELR’s lithium ion battery pack takes about five hours using a 240-volt charger.
As with all other Cadillacs, the ELR’s CUE system receives upgraded graphics and screen performance, 4G LTE internet with WiFi hot spot via OnStar, and a new wireless device charging system. Cadillac has also added standard blind-spot monitoring, automatic headlamps, and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2016 ELR can be quickly distinguished from its rare 2014 sibling by a redesigned grille and new wheel designs.
The price of the 2016 ELR drops from $78,250 for the 2014 car to $74,045 before any tax incentives.
