For 2007, the DTS, the only front-wheel-drive car in Cadillac’s fleet, undergoes a few changes: there are increased standard equipment, analogue clock graphics, centre wheel caps featuring a coloured wreath and crest, new key fob design, and Mobil 1 synthetic oil replaces the standard motor oil. OnStar receives the new “Directions & Connections” turn-by-turn navigation ability. There is a new Cocoa interior colour to replace the dark Cashmere scheme, and the interior centre stack changes from Ebony Mica to Dark Argent Metallic. On the outside, Mystic Gray replaces Ice Blue, Gold Mist replaces Cashmere, White Diamond replaces White Lightening, and Cognac Frost replaces Glacier White.
The new standard equipment includes a performance chrome wheel package on all models, available XM Satellite Radio, a cargo mat and rear sunshade.
The base engine is a 4.6-litre V8 that makes 275 hp; buyers can also order the DTS Performance Edition, which uses the same V8 but tweaks it to 292 hp; it revs higher, and puts more emphasis on quick launch and part-throttle response with greater peak torque. A four-speed Hydra-Matic transmission is used on both versions.
Features include dual-firmness seats, four-channel anti-lock brakes with traction control, StabiliTrak and brake assist, Magnetic Ride Control, 17-inch wheels (18-inch on the Performance Edition), heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, tri-zone climate control, heated windshield washer nozzles, power folding outside mirrors, front and rear park assist, and OnStar. A front bench seat can be substituted for six-passenger capacity.
Big but still nimble, and extremely comfortable, the DTS is old-school Cadillac; it is, after all, the renamed and refined DeVille. The larger engine gets everything moving much faster, although traditionalists will probably pocket the difference and stick with the smooth and adequate less-powerful engine. Perennial arch-rival Lincoln counters with the Zephyr – now awkwardly renamed the MKZ – but rear-wheel drive fans should also consider the equally comfortable and cheaper Chrysler 300C.
