Overview
Cadillac introduced the CT6 in 2016 as an ostensible replacement for the XTS as the top model in the brand's sedan lineup. Then, the XTS stuck around a few more years as a laid-back alternative to the CT6's sport sedan pretenses. With the CT6, Cadillac wants to steal some thunder from big sedans like the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Lexus LS.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
Accomplishing that goal will be easier this year as the Cadillac CT6 gains a new flagship engine called the Blackwing V8. It's a twin-turbo, 4.2L engine conceived to go up against the V8s in those German cars. The Blackwing replaces last year's turbo 3.0L V6, leaving a naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 as the base engine. Also new is a 10-speed transmission that replaces the previous eight-speed.
Last year's Sport trim has been discontinued.
Available Trims
The 2020 Cadillac CT6's trim levels are Luxury, Premium Luxury and Turbo Platinum. The first two use the 3.6L engine, and the third gets the new Blackwing V8. The standard transmission is a 10-speed automatic.
Standard Features
Luxury trim comes with 19-inch wheels, active noise cancellation, body-colour door handles, LED headlights and taillights, automatic wipers, 14-way power front seats, 8.0-inch colour driver information centre, an eight-speaker stereo, the Cadillac User Experience infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear park assist, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather seats, leather-trimmed steering wheel and remote engine start.
Premium Luxury adds forward collision alert, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring with lane change alert, rear cross traffic alert, low-speed forward automatic braking with pedestrian detection, anti-theft alarm, camera-based rearview mirror, 12-inch digital gauge cluster, head-up display, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, front cornering lights, hands-free trunk, lighted door handles, panoramic sunroof, 16-way power front seats, ambient interior lighting, 10-speaker surround-sound stereo, navigation, following distance indicator, surround-vision cameras, power rear-window sunshade and automatic parking assist.
Platinum trim adds the Blackwing engine, a magnetic ride control suspension, adaptive cruise control, reverse automatic braking, active rear-wheel steering, rear-seat infotainment, four-zone climate control, 20-way front seat adjustments, HDMI input, semi-aniline leather upholstery, hands-free driver assistance, driver attention system, advanced GPS and map data and night vision.
Key Options
The CT6's option sheet makes some of the Platinum trim's upscale features available in lesser versions of the car. A Premium Luxury rear seat package puts rear infotainment and four-zone climate control in that mid-level model; similarly, the Super Cruise package brings driver assistance, active rear steering and magnetic ride control to the Premium Luxury model.
To the base Luxury model Cadillac will let you add a panoramic sunroof, navigation and a driver awareness and convenience package that bundles the CT6's active safety and driver assist features (save for the Super Cruise kit, which can't be had at this level).
Fuel Economy
As we wrote this, Cadillac had yet to publish fuel consumption figures for the 2020 CT6. Therefore, we don't have estimates to share for the Platinum trim's new V8, but we think it will be rated something like 14.0/9.5 L/100 km (city/highway).
The 3.6L V6 should carry forward with its 13.0/8.8 L/100 km figures from last year's car.
Competition
As mentioned up top, the Cadillac CT6 competes with the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Lexus LS.
