An all-new model in 2006, the Buick Lucerne moves into 2007 with only minor changes. There’s a new OnStar “Directions & Connections” plan with turn-by-turn navigation; available heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel; available DVD-based navigation system; and a chrome grille is now optional on CXL and CSX trim lines. New interior colours include Cocoa/Cashmere, Cocoa/Shale and, on the CXS only, Titanium; new exterior colours are Light Quartz Metallic and Gold Mist Metallic.
The Lucerne is Buick’s premium model, situated above the entry-level Allure. Two powertrains are available: a 3.8-litre V6 that’s standard on the CX and CXL, and a 4.6-litre V8 standard on the CXS and optional on the CXL.
There are four specially-tuned suspension packages, with matching tire and wheel combinations. The CX has standard suspension with 16-inch wheels, the V6 CXL is slightly firmer and uses 17-inch wheels, V8 CXL models have firmer damping and magnetic-assist steering, and the CXS comes standard with 18-inch wheels and Magnetic Ride Control. This system, originally available only on Cadillac, uses magnetically-charged particles in a synthetic fluid to respond almost instantly to varying road surfaces and driving characteristics.
All models come standard with front bucket seats, but the CX and CXL models can be optioned with a 40/20/40 bench seat for six-passenger seating.
Features on the CX include 16-inch aluminum wheels, side and curtain airbags, keyless entry, OnStar, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, manual air conditioning, CD player with wheel-mounted audio controls and six speakers, cloth seats and six-way power driver’s adjustment.
The CXL adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, front cornering lights, automatic dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather-wrapped wheel, garage door opener, leather seats with six-way power passenger adjustment, and CD/MP3 player.
The CXS adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, heated mirrors with self-dimming driver’s side and integrated turn signals, perforated leather-wrapped wheel, memory package for seats and mirrors, heated seats with eight-way power driver and passenger adjustment, and nine-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system with XM Satellite radio.
The Lucerne offers traditional Buick ride and features, but with innovations like Magnetic Ride Control that update it for modern drivers who want handling ability with their long-distance comfort. In a nod to Buick tradition, the Lucerne features “portholes” on the fender: three on each side with the V6, and four apiece on the V8.
