History/Overview
The Encore GX is new to the Buick lineup for 2020. While it shares the Encore name with the brand's existing subcompact crossover model, the GX suffix denotes this model's larger size and more generous interior space, which help it slot between the base Encore and the Envision.
Available Trims
Buick offers the Envision in Preferred, Select and Essence trim levels. Preferred trim starts with front-wheel drive and a 1.2L three-cylinder turbocharged engine. Option an Encore GX Preferred to AWD and you get a more powerful 1.3L turbo three-cylinder; that combination is standard in Select and Essence trims.
The 1.2L/FWD combo comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission, while 1.3L/AWD versions get a nine-speed automatic.
Standard Features
Preferred trim comes dressed with 18-inch tires on alloy wheels, auto on/off headlights, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, LED daytime running lights and fog lights, passive keyless entry, and front and rear intermittent wipers.
Inside, there's a 10-way power driver's seat with lumbar, a 4.2-inch driver info display, a 6-speaker stereo with 8.0-inch touchscreen and satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, air conditioning, heated front seats, remote engine start, cruise control, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and tilt-and-telescopic steering.
All Encore GX trims are fitted with forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic braking, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, following distance indicator, tire pressure monitoring, and automatic high beams.
Select trim brings a hands-free power tailgate, roof rails, a rear centre armrest, dual-zone automatic climate control, blind spot monitoring with lane change and rear cross traffic alerts, and rear park assist.
Finally, Essence models gain LED headlights and taillights, chrome accents, a 120-volt power outlet, an 8-way power front passenger seat with lumbar, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and an integrated garage door opener.

A Sport Touring pack brings a number of exterior cosmetic enhancements.
Fuel Economy
Buick's fuel consumption estimates for the Encore GX are 9.0/7.7 with the 1.2L engine and FWD, and 9.0/8.0 with the 1.3L and AWD.
Competition
The Encore GX competes at the high end of the mainstream subcompact crossover market, and at the entry level of the upscale compact utility segment. That means its competitors include common models like the Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Chevrolet Trax and Ford EcoSport, and posher vehicles such as Audi's A3, the BMW X1/X2, Mercedes-Benz's GLA-Class, and the Cadillac XT4.
