BMW's largest crossover gets a new look for 2014, as sharpened edges replace last year's comparatively curvy bodywork.
The high-performance X5M is gone for 2014, but is due to return next year. That leaves three models powered by a trio of different engines.
Base trim is xDrive 35i, using a 3.0L turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Pay a little more, and you get the turbodiesel 3.0L six exclusive to the xDrive 35d model; it makes 255 hp and 413 lb-ft. Finally, a lot more dough gets you into the xDrive 50i, with its 4.4L V8 the produces 445 hp and 479 lb-ft, numbers that make it a bit harder to miss the hard-edged X5M.
As the xDrive moniker indicates, all three models are AWD, and all share an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Standard kit in xDrive 35i and 35d models includes 19-inch wheels and tires, steerable Xenon automatic headlights, adaptive brake lights, fog lights, heated, auto-dimming, and power-folding side mirrors and windshield washer jets, front and rear park assist, backup camera, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated steering wheel and front seats, power-adjustable tilt-and-telescopic steering, power tailgate, 10-way power-adjustable front seats with driver memory, Dakota leather seat upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, nine-speaker stereo with USB and auxiliary inputs and CD player, and Bluetooth.
Extra stuff included in xDrive 50i trim includes soft-close doors, garage door opener, navigation, and voice control for navigation, telephone and stereo functions.
