History/Overview
Introduced in 2015 and redesigned last year, the BMW X4 is an extension of the brand's compact crossover range. Labeled by its maker as a coupe, the X4 defines that definition with its sporty roofline while defying it with a four-door body. The X4 shares its mechanical components with the X3.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2020, the X4's uplevel M40i gets more power: horsepower and torque increase to 382 and 369, respectively, from last year's 355 hp and 365 lb-ft.
Available Trims
BMW sells the X4 in xDrive 30i and M40i trims. The former uses a turbo four-cylinder engine, and the latter a turbocharged straight six. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard in both variants.
Standard Features
On the outside, the X4 xDrive 30i gets 20-inch wheels with performance run-flat tires, a panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming side mirrors, LED fog lights, and M Sport suspension tuning.
Inside, there's a heated steering wheel, transmission shift paddles, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated/power-adjustable sport seats with driver memory, gloss oak wood trim, automatic climate control, satellite radio, connected drive services, Apple CarPlay, a WiFi hotspot, and a black headliner.
Safety-wise, all X4 models come with tire pressure monitoring, an alarm system, active protection, and the driving assistant suite.
The X4 xDrive M40i trades up to 21-inch wheels, M Sport brakes, an adaptive M suspension, a leatherette dashboard cover, aluminum/satin chrome trim, adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, an M leather steering wheel, and the M aerodynamics package.
Key Options
A premium package essential bundles passive keyless entry, an integrated garage door opener, ambient lighting, and a head-up display. An enhanced version of this package adds lumbar support, rear seat heating, adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, and wireless smartphone charging.
An advanced driver assistant package brings more active safety features, and surround view cameras.
Fuel Economy
BMW's fuel consumption estimates for the X4 are 10.0/8.2 L/100 km (city/highway) for the xDrive 30i model, and 11.3/8.7 L/100 km in M40i form.
Competition
The X4 competes in a smaller crowd than the more traditional X3. Mercedes-Benz makes a similar vehicle in its GLC-Class Coupe, and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque goes after customers looking for a sleek SUV.
