Following its introduction as a 2015 model, the X4 makes the move into 2016 with the addition of a third variant called the M40i. The M in its name suggests it's a high-performance model, and as the new top-of-the-range, it gets a more potent version of the 3.0L turbocharged six-cylinder engine also used in the xDrive35i model.
The M40i's power totals are 355 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque, next to the xDrive35i's 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. The entry-level choice remains the xDrive28i, with its 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder good for 241 hp and 258 lb-ft.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is the only one on offer, and all three come standard with xDrive all-wheel drive.
Fuel consumption ratings are 11.7/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway) in the 28i, 12.7/8.8 in the 35i, and 12.8/9.5 in the M40i.
MSRPs are $47,350 for the xDrive28i, $56,000 for the 35i, and the M40i starts at $59,700.
Standard equipment in 28i trim includes 18-inch wheels, LED fog lights, electric power steering, automatic bi-xenon headlights, adaptive brakelights, heated windshield washer jets, rain-sensing wipers, body-colour bumpers with black inserts, twin chrome exhaust tips, sliding cargo cover, leather-trimmed heated steering wheel, tilt-and-telescopic steering column, leatherette-trimmed heated eight-way power front seats with driver memory, two-zone automatic climate control, nine-speaker stereo with auxiliary and USB inputs and two subwoofers, and a 6.5-inch iDrive display.
35i models add 20-inch wheels, body-coloured lower trim, twin stainless steel exhaust tips with chrome finish, and 12-way Nevada leather front sport seats.
