History/Overview

BMW takes a two-pronged approach to the subcompact luxury segment, where it fields the X2 and this vehicle, the less-expensive X1. The first-generation X1 started out sharing a platform with the 3 Series sedan, but the current model is closely related to the Mini Countryman.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

It’s another carry-over year for the X1, which is unchanged from last year’s model. The current generation was introduced in 2016.

Available Trims

The 2022 BMW X1 comes in a single trim called the xDrive28i, powered by a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed transmission, and AWD.

Standard Features

BMW equips the X1 with 18-inch wheels, leatherette upholstery, heated/power-adjustable front seats, front and rear parking sensors, automatic A/C, LED headlights/fog lights, navigation, forward collision warning with city-speed automatic braking, and lane departure warning.

Key Options

An optional premium essential package adds more driver safety assists, adaptive headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and passive keyless entry. You can also get this package with a heated steering wheel.

An enhanced premium package builds on the essential package, adding sport seats with lumbar, auto-dimming mirrors, power-folding side mirrors, a power tailgate, and a parking assistant.

Fuel Economy

BMW’s fuel consumption estimates for the X1 are 10.3/7.7 L/100 km (city/highway).

Competition

If you’re shopping for an upscale subcompact crossover, the X1 lines up against the Audi Q3, Lexus NX, Volvo XC40, Buick Encore, Jaguar E-Pace, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and Cadillac XT4.
