2020 BMW X1

History/Overview

BMW introduced the X1 as its entry-level crossover model in 2012 and redesigned it into a second generation in 2016. In 2018, BMW rolled out the more compact X2. It shares a wheelbase measurement with the X1 but boasts tighter styling with smaller overall dimensions.

What's New / Key Changes from Last Year

This is the first update for the second-gen X1. It brings refreshed styling with larger grille openings that BMW says are functional, improving air flow to the radiator, but also better tie the X1's look to that of its larger crossover siblings, the X3, X5 and X7. The X1's refresh also moves the front fog lights and installs new taillights.

Interior changes comprise an upgrade to version 6 of the iDrive infotainment suite with Apple CarPlay, there's a new electronic gear lever, constrast stitching on the dash and floor mats and, in cars with the optional Dakota leather upholstery, colour matching for the lower part of the dashboard and the door handles.

The sole mechanical change is new gear ratios for the standard eight-speed automatic transmission.

Available Trims

The X1 comes in a single trim that can be augmented with option packages. Like last year's model, power is from a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine making 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. As mentioned above, the only transmission is an eight-speed automatic. BMW's xDrive AWD system is standard.

Standard Features

The 2020 BMW X1 includes 18-inch wheels, park distance control, SensaTec upholstery, leather-trimmed steering wheel, heated and power-adjustable front seats, driving assistant (lane departure warning, forward collision warning with brake intervention, speed limit information, and automatic high beams), ConnectedDrive services, 8.8-inch infotainment display, navigation, Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control and LED headlights.

Key Options

Among the X1's standalone options are metallic paint, Dakota leather upholstery, sport seats, sliding and reclining rear seats, adaptive headlights, parking assistant, premium sound system, wireless smartphone charging, heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, head-up display and a power tailgate. A driving assistant plus package brings more active safety features, including active cruise control with stop-and-go.

BMW also offers a Premium Essential package combining some of the above standalone items with power-folding side mirrors with auto-dimming, sport seats and a head-up display.

The M Sport package brings run-flat tires, sport transmission, M Sport exterior tweaks, sport seats, brushed aluminum or gloss black interior trim, M steering wheel and steering tuning and M sport suspension.

Fuel economy

As we write this, BMW has not published fuel consumption figures for the revised X1. However, its ratings should be similar to those for last year's model, which are 10.7/7.5 L/100 km (city/highway).

Competition

The 2020 BMW X1 competes with the Audi Q3, Lexus NX, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, Volvo XC40, Cadillac XT4, Buick Encore and Jaguar E-Pace. BMW also effectively competes with itself thanks to the aforementioned X2 and the BMW-built Mini Countryman.
