2021 BMW M5

History/Overview

The M5 is the ultimate version of BMW's 5 Series. It takes the luxury sports sedan and turns almost every element of it into a car that's ready for the race track. More power, more brakes, sports seats, upgraded suspension, but all still able to drive to the office every morning and pick the kids up from school.

What's New

For 2021, BMW has upgraded the M5 with some minor cosmetic changes outside. Inside, a new larger 12.3-inch touchscreen controls the infotainment system and has a quicker cloud-based nav system. Android Auto capability has been added as well. The standard M5 has been dropped with only the Competition remaining.

Available Trims

One version of the M5 is offered, the 617 hp BMW M5 Competition. It has a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 and all-wheel drive along with an eight-speed automatic.

Standard Features

The M5 comes with an M Sport exhaust as well as adaptive dampers and a lowered suspension. An M mode button lets you immediately switch from comfort to track modes, M compound brakes are standard, there is an Active M differential, and a flap-controlled exhaust for loud and quiet modes. Rear cross traffic, collision warning with city braking, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise, and emergency assist are all included.

The M5 gets Harman Kardon audio, heated M Sports seats, quad-zone climate control, keyless entry, and a heated steering wheel.

Key Options

A Premium package adds ventilated front seats, automatic trunk, wireless charging, parking assistant with surround view, front seat massage, Drive Recorder, rear sunshades, and Laserlight headlights. Ultimate package adds those features plus Driving Assistant Professional lane centering, traffic jam assistant, carbon engine cover, M Driver's package with higher top speed and one-day training course, gesture controls, fragrance dispensing Ambient Air package, and Bowers and Wilkins audio. The Advanced Driver Assistant pack adds traffic jam assistant and driving assistant professional.

Fuel Economy

The BMW M5 Competition should return an estimated 16.0 L/100 km city, 11.0 highway.

Competition

The BMW M5 Competition competes with the Porsche Panamera and Taycan, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, Audi RS7, Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S Four-door, and the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.
