New for 2022, the BMW i4 counts among the next generation of the brand’s electric cars, a four-door Gran Coupe that shares structural elements with the 4 Series, including a hatchback under which there is a generous cargo area.

Available Trims
BMW offers the i4 in eDrive40 and M50 trims. The former has a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, while the latter adds a front motor for more performance and AWD. Those motors are fed by an 83.9-kWh battery.
Standard Features
The i4 eDrive40 wears 18-inch wheels, and comes with an automatic trunk, forward collision warning, and LED headlights with automatic high beams. Inside, there’s leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a sunroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, sensatech dashboard, digital gauges, and a curved infotainment display.
M440i models add 19-inch wheels, adaptive suspension, auto-dimming/power-folding mirrors, heated front seats, and front and rear parking sensors.
Key Options
The eDrive40’s options include a premium essential package of BMW’s driving assistant (adaptive cruise, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring with a lance change warning), power-folding/auto-dimming side mirrors, automatic climate control, passive keyless entry, front and rear parking sensors, power front seats with memory, and a heated steering wheel. A premium enhanced package brings ambient lighting, a head-up display, a drive recorder, and surround-view cameras. To either of these packages you can also add heated rear seats.
Leather upholstery is available as a stand-alone option in both i4 trims.
Fuel Economy
BMW estimates the i4’s energy consumption at 2.1/2.2 Le/100 km (city/highway) in eDrive40 form, and 2.5/2.4 Le/100 km for the M50.
Competition
As we write this, the BMW i4’s key competitor is the Tesla Model 3.
