History/Overview
The 2020 model year marks the second year for BMW's new 8 Series, which last year revived a name previously attached to a now much sought-after grand touring coupe from the 1990s.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2020, the 8 Series gains a Gran Touring variant, a four-door model with a sporty roofline similar to that of the two-door 8 Series.
Available Trims
All three 8 Series variants come as the M850i, sharing a 4.4L twin-turbo V8, an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Buyers can choose from coupe, convertible (cabriolet) and Gran Coupe body styles.
Standard Features
M850i standard exterior features include laserlight headlights, an M aerodynamics package, an M rear spoiler (coupe only), high-gloss exterior trim, active steering, adaptive M suspension with active roll stabilization and rear-wheel steering, remote engine start, M Sport brakes and differential, passive keyless entry, and 20-inch wheels and tires. Cabriolet models come standard with a black roof.
Inside, the M850i comes with multifunction front sport seats, a heated centre front armrest, an M leather-trimmed steering wheel, soft-close doors, and a black Alcantara headliner.
Standard safety kit includes automatic high beams, parking assistant with surround-view cameras, satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Exclusive to the Gran Coupe's standard features list are a panoramic sunroof, rear and rear side sunshades, heated rear seats, and four-zone climate control.
Key Options
An executive package adds ventilated front seats, the driving assistant professional suite (which provides partial-autonomous driving capability), and a glass-topped shift lever and infotainment dial.
M850i coupe and Gran Coupe models can be had with a carbon roof and a separate carbon fibre exterior package.
Among the car's standalone extras is a night vision system with pedestrian detection.
Fuel Economy
BMW's fuel consumption estimates for the M850i coupe are 13.6/9.3 L/100 km (city/highway). Gran Coupe and convertible models are rated at 14.5/9.9 L/100 km.
Competition
The BMW 8 Series competes with some serious poshness in the grand touring segment. Among its key rivals are the Lexus LC and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, while the Audi S7 is a near-analog to the M850i Gran Coupe.
