The BMW 6 Series used to be the pinnacle of the brand’s car lineup, but then along came the 8 Series. With that new model taking over as BMW’s poshest two-door, the 6 Series’ coupe and convertible body styles are gone for 2019. That leaves the four-door Gran Turismo and Gran Coupe variants as the last members of the 6 Series family.
The Gran Coupe is the smaller and sleeker of the two, a four-door BMW nonetheless refers to as a coupe. Gran Turismo variants are longer and wider and, consequently, boast more interior space.
Gran Coupe buyers can have their cars one of three ways. The 640i uses a turbo six-cylinder engine capable of 320 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque; 650i gets a 4.4L turbo V8 good for 445 hp and 479 lb-ft; and the Alpina B6 Gran Coupe turns up the boost on that V8 to make 600 hp and 590 lb-ft.
The Gran Turismo comes in a single 640i variant that also uses a turbo six-cylinder, but tuned for 335 hp and 330 lb-ft.
All 6 Series variants come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive AWD. Gran Coupe uses 19-inch wheels, while Gran Turismo gets 20-inchers as standard.

The toughest thing is nailing down the 6 Series’ competitors. Mercedes-Benz’s CLS-Class is a mid-size four-door coupe worthy of cross-shopping with the 6 Series, but the Audi A7/S7 is closer in concept with its hatchback and large cargo area. There’s also the Porsche Panamera in either its standard form or the more wagon-esque Sport Turismo.
Standard features in the 6 Series include adaptive xenon headlights, LED fog lights, electric parking brake, heated windshield washers, front and rear park assist, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview and side mirrors, intelligent keyless entry, heated steering wheel, dynamic cruise control, power tilt-and-telescopic steering, Dakota leather upholstery and leatherette-trimmed dash, dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation and a 10.2-in iDrive display.
BMW’s fuel consumption estimates are 11.9/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway) for the 640i Gran Turismo; 12.3 / 8.4 in the 640i Gran Coupe; and 14.0/9.6 for the 650i and Alpina B6 versions of the Gran Coupe.
