Completely redesigned for 2011, the BMW 5 Series undergoes changes to the lineup for 2012. The 528i, which previously used a 3.0-litre six-cylinder, now uses a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine that includes auto start/stop technology, and is available in rear- or all-wheel drive. The 535i and 550i use the xDrive all-wheel system exclusively, and a six-speed manual previously optional on the 528i and 535i is no longer available. The M5, temporarily discontinued for 2011, returns for 2012. The Gran Turismo (GT) is unchanged.
The 5 Series sedan is available as the 528i, 528i xDrive, 535i xDrive, 550i xDrive, and M5, while the Gran Turismo comes as the 535i xDrive and 550i xDrive.
The 528i models use a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with auto start/stop technology; the 535i uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with start/stop; and the 550i models use a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. The M5 uses a higher-performance 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 and includes auto start/stop technology. The regular sedans and GT use an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the M5 uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Features on the 528i include 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless entry, pushbutton start, automatic adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, fog lights, auto-dimming and power-folding heated mirrors, heated washer jets, park distance control, rain-sensing wipers, tire pressure warning system, alarm system, active front head restraints, climate-controlled centre armrest storage, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power sunroof, heated multifunction leather-wrapped power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, illuminated vanity mirrors, garage door opener, auto up/down windows, ten-way power-adjustable heated ?leatherette? seats, CD/DVD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input and USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, BMW Assist and iDrive with 7.2-inch screen.
The 528i xDrive adds headlight washers and hill descent control.
The 535i xDrive adds proximity key, through-load system, and leather upholstery.
The 550i xDrive adds 19-inch alloy wheels, Dynamic Driving Control with Sport and Sport+ settings, rearview camera, anthracite roof liner, 18-way power-adjustable seats, heated rear seats, sport steering wheel, premium speaker system, Gracenote media database, navigation system, voice control, and 10.2-inch iDrive screen.
Features on the GT 535i xDrive include 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic adaptive bi-xenon headlamps with cornering lights, front and rear fog lights, hill descent control, rain-sensing wipers, heated washer jets, front and rear active park assist, tire pressure warning system, keyless entry, power liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambient lighting, dynamic cruise control, power tilt and telescopic multifunction leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, illuminated vanity mirrors, auto up/down windows, garage door opener, ten-way power-adjustable heated leather seats, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat, AM/FM stereo with auxiliary input and USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, BMW Assist, and iDrive with 7.2-inch screen.
The GT 550i xDrive adds four-zone automatic climate control, rearview camera, proximity key, 16-way power-adjustable seats, heated rear seats, DVD/MP3 capability, Gracenote media database, hard disc drive storage, premium speaker system, Bluetooth text-to-speech, navigation system, voice control, and 10.2-inch iDrive screen.
Features on the M5 include active M differential, M-specific Servotronic steering, high-performance compound brakes, leather sport seats, M-specific steering wheel and instrument cluster, dynamic damper control, adaptive xenon headlamps, aluminum interior trim, iDrive with 10.2-inch screen, and colour head-up display.
