A car that began in 2014 as a re-named 3 Series coupe and convertible and last year gained a four-door coupe hatchback model, the 4 Series moves into 2016 with no significant changes to any of its variants.
All three body styles can be had with a choice of a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder (428i) engine making 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, or 3.0L turbocharged six-cylinder (435i) that cranks out 300 hp and 300 lb-ft.
All 428i and 435i come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission; a six-speed manual is a no-cost option in 428i Coupe and Grand Coupe models, and 435i Coupe models.
Coupe and convertible models are also offered in high-performance M4 guise, using a 3.0L turbocharged inline six generating 425 hp and 406 lb-ft. Here, a six-speed manual is standard, the automatic option being a seven-dual-clutch transmission.
BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive is available in 428i and 435i models, but the M4 rear-drive only, with no AWD option.
Standard kit in the 428i and 428i xDrive includes 18-inch wheels, adaptive LED brakelights, automatic bi-xenon headlights, fog lights, heated side mirrors and windshield washer jets, tire pressure monitor, rain-sensing wipers, eight airbags (including driver and front passenger knee blockers), aluminum doorsills with BMW Sport label, fully-lined trunk, three-spoke leather sport steering wheel, tilt-and-telescoping steering column, heated eight-way power-adjustable leather front seats with adjustable side bolsters and thighrest, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, Bluetooth, nine-speaker CD stereo with USB integration and satellite radio pre-wiring, on-board computer, and 6.5-inch iDrive display.
The 435i adds 18-inch wheels, doorsills with 'M' labelling, 40/20/40 split folding rear seats, and a heated M-sport steering wheel.
The M4 gets M sport seats upholstered in cloth and leather, and adds a 16-speaker stereo, 20GB hard-disc media storage, and an in-dash DVD drive.
