With more than a half million units produced in just two generations, Audi has made its mark on the automotive design world with the iconic TT. An all-new model arrives on the scene for 2016 with sharp new looks that are an homage to the original’s curvy exterior.
Although the TT Coupe and Roadster continue to share a floorpan with the VW Golf and other MQB-platform vehicles, the changes are extensive. For instance, it's the only MQB vehicle to feature aluminum components in its structure. Torsional rigidity is up by 25%, yet the vehicle is lighter than ever. A slightly longer wheelbase aims to increase high-speed stability, but the overall length of the vehicle has been trimmed to maintain a compact feel. Audi put particular emphasis on the handling with this generation – increasing steering sharpness and feedback, while reducing understeer to ensure that the TT isn’t just a high-grip traction machine, but a truly engaging sports car.
Inside, the cabin is a revolution in design and technology. The new Virtual Cockpit sees the instrument cluster merge with the infotainment display in front of the driver for a clean, unobstructed dashboard. The full TFT screen is adaptive, displaying the stereo and navigation functions (where equipped). The air vents also house the HVAC and seat heating controls. As you’d expect, rear-seat room is tight but the Coupe’s hatchback body style offers easy access to the cargo bay. Overall cargo space for the coupe is down slightly to a still-respectable 340 L.
The base TT Coupe and TT Roadster use a carried-over 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder which has been fettled with to produce 220 hp (+9 hp); torque remains the same at 258 lb-ft.
The big news is the TTS, which gets a more potent version of the same engine that’s shared in common with the Audi S3 and Volkswagen Golf R. With 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, it can slingshot the TTS to 100 km/h in less than five seconds – quicker than a Porsche Cayman S or Jaguar’s F-Type V6 S Coupe. All TT models come standard with the latest version of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system and a six-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. For the time being the TTS is only offered as a Coupe; we expect the Roadster version to follow shortly.
TT Coupe includes 18-inch wheels, tire-pressure monitor, adaptive xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights, rain and light sensor, electric rear spoiler, body-colour power and heated side view mirrors, eight-way power seats with four-way lumbar support, sports seats, heated seats, front arm rest, Nappa leather upholstery, aluminum trim, ambient lighting, auto-dimming rearview mirror, automatic climate control, alarm, integrated garage door opener, keyless entry with push-button start, MMI touch infotainment interface, 155-watt nine-speaker AM/FM/Satellite radio with Bluetooth, USB, and aux-in jacks, cruise control, electric parking brake, rear parking sensors, and Audi Drive Select with configurable drive modes.
TT Roadster adds insulated electric power top, electric wind deflector and a ski bag.
Both TT Coupe and Roadster can be fitted with a number of equipment packages. The S line Sport Package adds S line exterior bodykit and badges, 19-inch sport wheels, S line aluminum door trim, S line suspension, and anthracite interior trim. The Driver Comfort Package adds front and rear parking sensors, proximity key, reverse camera, and blind-spot monitoring. Key options include navigation, Bang & Olufsen sound system, and lane-keeping assist.
TTS Coupe builds on the standard TT Coupe with 19-inch wheels, silver exterior mirror covers, full LED headlights, lacquer silver interior trim, S badge scuff plates, magnetic suspension, cruise control speed limiter, quad exhaust tips.
The Driver Comfort Package adds front and rear parking sensors, proximity key, reverse camera, and blind-spot monitoring. Key options include navigation, electrically adjustable seat bolsters, red-painted brake calipers, Bang & Olufsen sound system, and lane-keeping assist.
