History/Overview
The Audi S4 is part of the brand’s A4 compact luxury sedan lineup, with the S indicating its position as a high-performance version of the entry-grade A4. Audi redesigned the S4 in 2018, and refreshed its styling in 2020.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2020, there are a few new features: base models add custom colour ambient lighting and Amazon Alexa integration, and uplevel versions get Audi’s full suite of driver safety assists and wireless smartphone charging.
Available Trims
Audi offers the S4 in Progressiv and Technik trim levels. Both are powered by a 3.0L turbo V6, AWD, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Standard Features
S4 Progressiv is standard with 19-inch wheels, LED headlights with automatic high beams, LED taillights, heated/auto-dimming side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, and passive keyless entry with hands-free trunk opening.
Inside, you get heated front sport seats with lumbar and massage, Nappa leather upholstery, ambient lighting, three-zone A/C, a heated steering wheel with shift paddles, auto-dimming rearview mirror, sunroof, and an integrated garage door remote. A 10.1-inch touchscreen powers a 10-speaker stereo with satellite radio, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa. The driver gets a digital gauge cluster.
The S4’s standard safety kit comprises pre sense city, pre sense rear, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and an exit warning system.
Technik trim adds LED matrix headlights with washers, upgraded taillights, power-folding side mirrors, wireless smartphone charging, rear-seat USB charge points, and a Bang & Olufsen stereo. Also included here is Audi’s full advanced driver assist suite, with a top-view camera, adaptive cruise, pre sense front, traffic congestion assist, traffic sign recognition, active lane assist, and hands-on detection.
Key Options
A Progressiv advanced driver assistance package brings the same safety features as detailed above for the Technik model, minus the top-view camera, which is a stand-alone extra in Progressiv trim.
To both trims, a dynamic package adds a sport differential and adaptive damping suspension.
Fuel Economy
Audi’s fuel consumption estimates for the S4 are 11.1/8.0 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
The Audi S4 competes with the same list of upscale sedans as its A4 sibling – BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Volvo S60, Cadillac CT5, Genesis G70, Lexus IS, Alfa Romeo Giulia, and Infiniti Q50 – but goes after higher trims with more potent engines and sharper chassis tunings.
