History/Overview
Despite being a performance variant of the A4, the Audi S4 name actually goes back further than the A4's. It arrived in the early 1990s as a sport version of the Audi 100, and then snuggled into the top of the A4 range when that model was introduced in the mid 1990s.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2020, the Audi S4 gets a mid-cycle update similar to that of its A4 sibling. There's new styling on the outside, and a more tech-intensive cabin with a larger infotainment display.
Available Trims
Audi offers the S4 in Progressiv and Technik trims. Both use a 3.0L turbo V6 with auto start/stop mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and Audi's Quattro AWD.
Standard Features
Among the S4's standard exterior and mechanical features are 18-inch wheels and tires, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, LED headlights and taillights, drive modes, push-button ignition, hands-free trunk opening, gloss window trim, and all-weather lights.
Inside, the S4 comes with a new 10.1-inch infotainment display, a sunroof, split-folding rear seats, a garage door opener, three-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats with power lumbar and massage, an auto-dimming frameless rearview mirror with compass, Nappa leather upholstery, a leathed-trimmed steering wheel, passive keyless entry, a 10-speaker stereo, a digital gauge cluster, and navigation.
Standard safety features include tire pressure monitoring, city-speed forward collision detection with automatic braking and rear collision detection, blind spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, auto on/off headlights, exit warning, and front and rear parking sensors.
S4 Technik adds 360-degree exterior camera views, 19-inch wheels and tires, LED matrix headlights with washers, power-folding side mirrors, dynamic LED taillights, ambient interior lighting, and a Bang & Olufsen stereo.
Key Options
Audi's advanced driver assist package adds adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, active lane and traffic congestion assists, traffic sign recognition, and all-speed forward collision detection with automatic braking.
Fuel Economy
Audi's fuel consumption estimates for the S4 are 11.8/8.9 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
The Audi S4 technically competes with the same cars as its A4 sibling, but is more specifically aimed at speedier versions of those other models. They include the BMW M340i, Mercedes-AMG's C 43, the Volvo S60 T6, Cadillac's CT4-V, the Lexus IS 350, Infiniti's Q50 Red Sport, and the Acura TLX A-Spec.
