The Audi S4 sedan and Avant wagon are redesigned for 2006, with the company’s new “big-nose” corporate face and several changes, including all-new side sheet metal, redesigned rear styling, optional Bluetooth prep with voice control, satellite radio prewiring, V8 badge under the side turn signal, standard brushed aluminum interior trim, optional rear Parktronic, 14-spoke 18-inch Quattro GmbH/BBS wheels in the Premium Package, and with the manual transmission, a 40/60 Quattro “Torsen C” drivetrain.
As with its sibling A4, the cabriolet was an entirely new model for 2005, and is a carryover into 2006, with the model’s previous styling. Unlike the A4, which receives two new engines for 2006, the S4 stays with its 4.2-litre V8 from 2005.
The sedan and Avant each come in a single trim line and are similarly-equipped, including a six-speed manual transmission (a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic manual mode is optional), 18-inch wheels with high-performance tires, front and rear ventilated brake discs, S4-tuned sport suspension, headlight washers, bi-Xenon headlights with automatic self-levelling, front and rear fog lights, dual-zone climate control, ski sack, twelve-way power heated Recaro sport seats, 60/40 folding rear seat, leather interior and six-CD changer.
The S4 cabriolet adds a master switch that lowers all windows at the same time, twelve-way sport seats, and an active rollover protection system.
The S4 offers superb fit-and-finish, razor-sharp handling, long-term comfortable seats and attention to detail. Its V8 power makes it an exceptional driving machine, but with a $21,065 premium over the V6 A4 Quattro sedan, expect only serious enthusiasts to be moving up.
