For 2006, the Audi A6 gains a new model, the 3.2 Tiptronic Quattro Avant wagon. There’s also a 3.2 sedan with front-wheel-drive and continuously variable transmission (CVT) but it’s for the U.S. market and isn’t sold in Canada.
Changes to the sedan include an available S-Line package for both 3.2 and 4.2 sedans; a Bose surround sound standard on 4.2; adaptive cruise control and adaptive air suspension are available; aluminum door sill trim is standard; there’s a valet function on the glove box; 17-inch wheels are standard on the 3.2; a wood and leather multifunction steering wheel with paddles is available on the 3.2 and 4.2; a heated steering wheel controlled by a separate switch is available; wood trim is standard on all models; and there are two new colours, Atlas Grey metallic and on the S-Line only, a new Misano Red.
The A6 sedan is available with a 3.2-litre V6 or 4.2-litre V8, both with Quattro all-wheel-drive. The new Avant uses the 3.2-litre V6, with Quattro. The V6 is the first application of Audi’s Fuel Straight Injection (FSI) technology in North America. Fuel is injected directly into the intake port, rather than the combustion chamber, through an injector on the side of the cylinder head that’s fed by a single-piston pump and common rail fuel line. The system delivers higher torque and power output with lower fuel consumption.
Features on the 3.2 sedan include 17-inch alloy wheels, Servotronic speed-sensitive steering, four-spoke multifunction leather-wrapped wheel, fog lights, puddle lights in all doors, automatic dual-zone climate control, heated mirrors, leather seating surfaces, twelve-way power heated front seats, six-CD changer and rain sensor.
The 4.2 adds power-adjustable steering column, power sunroof, bi-Xenon headlights, auto-dimming and power folding exterior mirrors with memory, Homelink garage door opener, full leather upholstery and premium sound system with separate 24-CD pouch.
The Avant has the same features as the sedan, along with power sunroof, power outlet in the cargo area and rear washer/wiper. A power tailgate is available.
The A6 is a perfect blend of cushiness and performance, a step up from the A4 but not into the ultra price-tag of the A8. The 3.2-litre does an admirable job of moving the A6 around, while the V8 is pure muscle tempered with Teutonic luxury and Audi’s legendary all-wheel-drive system. The Avant is a welcome addition to the line-up, offering all of the sedan’s charm with the cargo-carrying abilities of a wagon.
