Issue:
On certain vehicles, the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may malfunction. This could cause the airbag system to turn off the passenger-front airbag even when a passenger is seated. Note: This problem would cause an error message to display on the instrument panel and a warning chime to sound. The airbag indicator light would also display "passenger airbag off".
Safety Risk:
An airbag that is turned off could increase the risk of injury to a passenger in a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Audi will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect the front passenger seat. Depending on the seat type, the dealer will either replace the seat heating mat including the connecting cable or the entire seat cover.

Issue:
On certain vehicles, a layer of protective tape may not have been installed around a wiring harness in the spare tire area. As a result, the wiring harness could become damaged in a rear crash. If this happens, it may not be possible to open the doors from the outside and/or the hazard lights may not work.
Safety Risk:
Doors that cannot be opened from the outside could increase the risk of injury after a crash. Hazard lights that do not work could make the vehicle less visible and increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Audi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to apply protective tape to the wiring harness for the rear lights.

A short circuit or overheating of the pump could increase the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Additional Note: For the Audi A4, S4, A5 and S5 models, this campaign only affects the Cabriolet versions of these models. Also to Note: This recall supersedes the Audi brand vehicles subject to recall 2016-064 (Audi Recall 69N1) and 2016-065 (69N2). Audi brand vehicles completed under the previous 2016-064 and 2016-065 recalls require repair under this recall, as the previous recall remedy was an interim repair. Interim repair parts must be replaced with final repair parts.

If this were to occur, the loosened trim may bend away from the speaker cover and could expose sharp edges, which could increase the risk of injury to occupants. On certain vehicles, the driver frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will replace the front driver airbag inflator. Note: This campaign only affects the Audi A5 and Audi S5 Cabriolet models.
