History/Overview
The Audi A4 is the German luxury brand's compact sedan, and is currently in its fifth generation following a mid-1990s introduction. A high-performance variant called S4 and a wagon/crossover hybrid known as A4 Allroad are covered in separate buyer's guide entries.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2020, the Audi A4 gets a significant mid-cycle refresh that brings new styling and an updated interior built around technology upgrades.
Available Trims
Audi offers the A4 in Komfort, Progressiv and Technik trims. All are powered by a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine with auto start/stop mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission and Quattro AWD.
Standard Features
A4 Komfort's exterior comes fitted with 18-inch wheels and tires, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, all-weather lights, LED headlights and taillights, and high-gloss window trim.
Inside, there's a new 10.1-inch infotainment display, a sunroof, a colour driver info display, heated/power-adjustable front seats with driver lumbar, automatic climate control, leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth, Audi music and smartphone interface with USB connectivity, satellite radio, push-button engine start and drive modes.
Standard safety features include city-speed forward collision detection with automatic braking, rear collision detection, rain-sensing wipers, auto on/off headlights, Audi Connect, and exit warning.
Progressiv trim adds automatic high beams, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, a different wheel design, hands-free trunk opening, S-line exterior trim, a digital gauge cluster, garage door opener, a heated steering wheel, aluminum interior trim, passive keyless entry, auto-dimming side mirrors, frameless rearview mirror with compass, driver's seat memory, and navigation.
Finally, Technik brings another different wheel style, 360-degree exterior camera views, LED matrix headlights, power-folding side mirrors, headlight washers, dynamic LED taillights, ambient interior lighting, and a Bang & Olufsen stereo.
Key Options
A Komfort convenience package adds parking sensors, driver's seat memory, auto-dimming side mirrors, a heated steering wheel, passive keyless, and rear cross traffic alert.
Progressiv and Technik offer comfort seating and advanced driver assist packages. The former bundles venilated front sport seats and front passenger power lumbar. The latter brings adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, active lane and traffic congestion assists, traffic sign recognition, and all-speed forward collision detection with automatic braking.
An S-line sport pack for the top two trims adds 19-inch wheels and various other cosmetic extras.
Fuel Economy
Audi's fuel consumption estimates for the A4 are 10.0/7.3 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
Competitors for the A4 come from far and wide. The best-known of them are the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz's C-Class. Other notable contenders are the Genesis G70, Volvo's S60, the Cadillac CT4, Infiniti's Q50, the Lexus IS, and Acura's TLX.
