For 2013, the A4/S4 sedans receive a mid-cycle refresh, with subtly updated exterior styling and minor interior trim updates. Powertrains are carryover, though. A 2.0L turbocharged I4 with 211 hp powers all A4s. The base, front-drive A4 sports a CVT with eight simulated gears. A six-speed manual or an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic are available on the all-wheel-drive models. The sportier S4 continues with its 333-hp, supercharged 3.0L V6. As before, the A4 offers a typically well-made Audi interior, sporty and refined driving characteristics enclosed in a modern design. And despite a new BMW 3 Series for 2013 and just-refreshed Mercedes C-Class, the A4 still ranks near the top of its very competitive class.
The Allroad Quattro is the only way to get into an A4 wagon. As the spiritual successor to the 1999 to 2005 mid-size A6 Avant version, the new, all-wheel-drive A4 Allroad sports the requisite SUV-mimicking two-tone fender flares and protective skid plates. Gone is the A6 Allroad’s adjustable air suspension. Instead, the A4 version’s ride height has been raised almost 40 millimetres and utilizes the A5 coupe's wider front and rear tracks for light off-road duties. The A4’s 2.0L turbocharged I4 with 211-hp mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission is the only powertrain choice. And as much as Audi designers tried to distinguish this year’s A4 Allroad from last year’s A4 Avant, inside, much remains the same.
Standard features in entry-level A4 Premium models include 17-inch wheels, eight-way power front seats with four-way lumbar for driver, fixed rear seatback, leather seats, sunroof, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers, electric power steering, automatic temperature control and a space-saving spare tire.
